The premise of my coaching practice is that by approaching our individual health with a holistic lens, we benefit not only ourselves, but the health of the planet.
Since I was a young girl I've had a profound relationship with nature. I've campaigned for environmental non-profits, worked for eco-businesses, marched in environmental protests, signed endless petitions, treeplanted as a career for seven years and devoted many editorials as a newspaper editor to the topic of help saving Planet Earth.
I also struggled off and on with weight gain, poor digestion, skin issues, depression and anxiety, and a compromised immune system despite my active outdoor lifestyle and dedicated yoga practice.
In my mid 30s while on a trip to Kuwaii, I experimented with an elimination diet - I eliminated everything except the bountiful tropical fruit the Hawaiian Islands are known for! A little extreme to eat just fruit for ten days, but the effects were amazing. My energy shot up, my weight plummeted, my digestion became incredibly efficient and I felt so serene and at peace. Returning to the cold Canadian winter diet, I adopted a vegan diet and felt like I'd found cloud nine.
But life's stressors caught up to me. An abrupt career change combined with financial complications and the end of a relationship led to me landing in a new community. The transition resulted in the return of my old health problems as I turned to comfort foods laden with dairy, processed grains and sugar as a crutch to help me cope.
Within a year and a half of moving, my weight had reached a 12-year high, I found myself constantly falling sick and a visit to an osteopath confirmed the diagnosis of chronic stress.
That was 2014. Fast forward to today and I've stabilized my weight, my digestion system has never been happier, I have an abundance of energy, and old health problems are a distant memory. Doctor visits now are check ups instead of knee-jerk responses.
This is all because of the perspective I adopted: of food as my medicine and fuel for my body with a focus on organic, wholesome, dairy-free and plant-based eating (which can mean vegan but can also include moderate amounts of ethically & sustainably raised animal protein). I also make consumer choices based on the yoga practice of "ahimsa", or non-violence (choosing cruelty-free products not tested on animals) and opting for natural ingredients over toxins and chemicals. Practising mind-body awareness through yoga is an essential part of managing my everyday stress and staying self-empowered to make healthy choices. So is spending as much time as I can in nature and being as active as my schedule permits.
In making these choices, not only am I seeing incredible benefits to my health, my vitality, my self-confidence and more, but I carry with me a sense of peace that I am doing what I can for the betterment of our planet. In order to solve the climate crisis and heal its environment, the Earth needs us to limit chemicals and toxins, end factory farming practices, foster more compassion and love as a collective (starting with self-love) and develop a relationship with Mother Nature whereby we live each day like we are interconnected with her, not separate.
